ICAS Results Explained: What Each Award Actually Means

Your child’s ICAS result will show one of five awards. Here is exactly what each one means in percentages — and, just as importantly, what group those percentages are measured against.

What does a High Distinction in ICAS mean?

A High Distinction places your child in the top 1% of students in their year level, in that subject, in their country. A Year 5 Science High Distinction means the top 1% of Australian Year 5 students who sat ICAS Science — not the top 1% of everyone who sat the paper.

Which course follows which ICAS subject?

The useful next step depends on which subject the result came from, not just the band:

Is a Distinction in ICAS good?

Yes. A Distinction means your child scored higher than roughly 89% of students in their year level for that subject. Fewer than one student in eight receives a Distinction or above.

Is my child compared against all students, or only their year?

Only their own year level, in that subject, in their own country. This is the detail most explanations get wrong. A Year 4 Credit and a Year 9 Credit are both “the next 25%” — but of completely different groups. Your child is never ranked against older students.

When do ICAS results come out?

Results reach schools first, and the student portal follows. UNSW publishes the exact release schedule each year; check your school’s notification rather than relying on a date circulated informally, as timing varies by subject and sitting window.

What should we do next?

High Distinction or Distinction. Your child is working well above year level. The useful next step is structured extension rather than more of the same — an acceleration course a full stage ahead, or the Junior Science Olympiad pathway.

Credit. Solidly above average, with clear headroom. Acceleration in the subject they did best in tends to pay off fastest, because the reasoning ICAS rewards is the same reasoning those courses drill.

Merit or Participation. The award alone does not show which topics cost the marks, and guessing wastes a term. A free diagnostic pinpoints the gaps in twenty minutes.

Which band should start which course?

High Distinction or Distinction. Already working above year level. Go straight to the advanced course in that subject — more of the same year’s work will not stretch them.

Credit. Above average with real headroom. One acceleration course in their strongest subject moves the next result more than spreading effort across three.

Merit or Participation. Start with the foundation course in the subject they sat. It rebuilds the ground the paper tested, in order, rather than jumping ahead.

Every course opens its first three lessons free, so the level can be checked before anything is paid for.
