What is John Locke?

John Locke Essay Competition

The John Locke Institute invites students worldwide to answer demanding academic questions. Its 2026 Global Essay Prize spans ten subject categories, with separate junior and senior judging.

Who & what

The 2026 baseline is a maximum of 2,000 counted words per essay, excluding specified supporting material. Submit an anonymous PDF with the required filename and provide an academic referee. Junior entrants are under 15 on 31 May.

Students develop and write their own answers. Keep a research and assistance record and be ready to explain the argument aloud.

What does supported self-paced include?

20 lessons, guided reading, human checks of lesson tasks and reading summaries, and three one-to-one teacher feedback sessions at the outline, first draft and final draft. A$798.

How does the live Zoom course work?

Four students, 20 weekly sessions of 90 minutes, teacher guidance throughout, three written full-work reviews and four stage progress reports. A$1,998. Starts from November 2026; exact group dates and times are confirmed before payment.

What will I complete?

An independent competition essay, research dossier, reading portfolio and submission checklist.

How much independent study is expected?

5–7 hours a week; 7–9 during full-draft revision.
